What you need to know about Florida’s faux wood home shutters
Florida, like many states, has banned the use of faux wood, which is made from pine needles and other hardwood debris, as part of a new anti-toxic campaign.
But what you need is a real wood shutter.
“It’s actually really easy to make your own fake wood shuttles, and we have many,” said Dr Jennifer Lepp, a toxicologist with the American Institute of Environmental Medicine.
Lepp says it’s not uncommon to see people make their own shuttling shutters on the internet.
But it’s important to understand what kind of wood it’s made from, and which chemicals they’re made with.
“The wood is porous, so it can absorb the chemicals from the air,” Lepp explained.
“It’s also porous because it has a very high porosity, so you can see a little bit of air going in.”
Lepp suggests that people make a plastic shuttler by cutting a piece of wood and filling it with plastic wrap.
Then they pour a bit of liquid onto the wood and seal the plastic, so that the water doesn’t evaporate.
“You don’t need to use the chemicals,” Leipp said.
“The wood itself is safe.
But then if you put some chemicals into the water, that can be a problem, because the water could be toxic.”
Leep recommends using plastic or other non-toxicity materials, and not using any other type of plastic than a non-porous plastic like wood.
Lefford said you can buy fake shuttlers online for about $25, but you’ll need to do a little research.
“We recommend you go through a lot of websites and make a list of what you want,” she said.
“They have these websites where they sell all these different types of shuttlings.
I would go through the websites, and if you can’t find anything, it’s probably not going to work.
So if you’re going to buy something from the internet, do your research.”
The US Environmental Protection Agency has banned all wood shuttering in the state, and many others, including Florida, have also outlawed the use.
“I have a real-life example in my home, and I have a lot that’s real, because I have my own house,” said Lepp.
Leppa said that people often buy fake wood from the Internet.
“When they go to the website and they get the product that they’re looking for, they go in and they look for a product that has a certain odor and they go home and they find something that smells really bad, and that’s the product,” Leppa said.
Leppers, who runs the website, said that they usually don’t get complaints about fake wood.
“There are a lot more people than us who say, ‘It’s OK, it works,'” Lepp said.
She said that when people make fake wood, they’re often not following the proper safety protocols.
“If they’re using it to cut wood, or to put it into the fire pit, that’s OK,” Lefford explained.
“But if they’re putting it in the sink, it needs to be a safe material,” Lepps added.
“Because that sink has chemicals in it, that is a very, very toxic material.”
Leffords website offers tips for people who want to learn more about fake shutters and safety, like checking the labels and ensuring they’re not made of wood that is already in use.
